What exactly is local SEO?

Local SEO means getting your business found on Google by people near you. Search "plumber near me" and the first thing Google shows is three business listings with stars and a call button, then the websites. Each of those is a free listing Google gives a business (Google calls it a Google Business Profile). Local SEO is the work that gets your listing into those three for the suburbs you cover, because those three get most of the calls.

When is local SEO worth it?

It suits plumbers whose week runs on local call-outs and quoted jobs nearby. It pays off when:

  • people nearby are searching right now: "plumber near me" runs about 22,200 searches a month across Australia
  • a lot of your work is urgent, and urgent jobs go to whichever business Google shows first
  • you would rather keep a spot at the top of Google than rent one from Google Ads forever

Your Google listing is one part of the picture. The full system is laid out in marketing for plumbers. Getting your website found for everything else people type is SEO for tradies. The website the listing sends people to is on websites for plumbers. How we do this for any trade is on local SEO for tradies, and if you want to set up your Google listing yourself, our Google Business Profile guide shows you how.

We know the numbers before we start.

"Plumber near me" alone runs about 22,200 searches a month in Australia. Every "near me" and "local" form together comes to 134,860 a month, and every search from someone looking to hire a plumber to 1.6 million a month; the whole count, suburb by suburb, is on how many people search for a plumber.

Local SEO questions?

See if we answered it below.

What are the three businesses at the top of Google?

They are Google Business Profile listings. Search "emergency plumber near me" and the three businesses at the top with stars and a call button are them. Google fills them with the businesses it trusts most in that area, and for an urgent plumbing search they get most of the calls, because people can ring straight from there.

What's the difference between local SEO and SEO?

Two different jobs. Local SEO gets your Google listing into the three at the top when someone nearby searches, and runs on the listing, your reviews and the suburbs you list. SEO gets your website coming up for everything else people type. We do both: see SEO for plumbers.

How much does local SEO cost?

It comes down to how many other plumbers are competing in your area, and how much needs fixing first. It's monthly work, usually in the low thousands a month for a small plumbing business. You get the exact number on a call, and there's no lock-in.

Does local SEO work for a plumber?

It's the trade we can show it in. Quick Mick's Plumbing sits on page one of Google for around 40 searches and takes about 10 new clients a month from being found, with no ad spend. The review is in the carousel above, in the owner's own words.

Can I do local SEO myself?

The basics, yes. Fill out your Google listing properly, keep your name, address and phone the same everywhere your business is listed online, and ask every happy client for a review. That alone puts a lot of plumbers ahead. The full guide is on our local SEO for tradies page.

How many suburbs can I show up in?

Google lets a mobile business list the suburbs it works in instead of a shopfront address. Keep it to suburbs you genuinely take jobs in, up to about two hours out. Padding it with far suburbs looks like spam to Google and can drag the whole listing down.

How long does local SEO take?

Count on 4 to 8 weeks for first movement in a quieter area, and 3 to 6 months in a busy city one. Once you hold a spot, it keeps bringing calls without paying per click.

Is SEO dead in 2026?

No, but it has changed. Google's AI now answers plenty of questions directly, yet nobody's AI clears a blocked drain. Urgent plumbing searches still end in a phone call, and the three listings at the top still decide who gets it.

How many people search for a plumber?

About 1.6 million times a month across Australia, adding up every Google search from someone looking to hire one: the suburb searches, the job searches, "near me" and the emergencies (Semrush AU, pulled 8 September 2026). The full count, by job, city and suburb, is on how many people search for a plumber.
