For Australian trade businesses
Digital marketing for tradies, explained
To market a trade business online you need a website that shows up on Google, your Google listing, reviews, paid ads and the lead platforms. This guide puts a real number on each, then gives you a starting order.
What are the seven ways to get work?
Here are all seven before we take them one at a time. Marketing people call them channels. Three terms need a plain meaning first. SEO means getting your business found on Google. Local SEO means getting found by people near you, and that runs on your Google Business Profile: the free listing Google gives your business, with your reviews, hours and a call button. Every one below gets its own section, its own number, and a deeper guide where we've written one.
Where the leads come from
Channels you own
- Website + SEO
- Google Business Profile
- Reviews
- Social posts
Paid channels
- Google Ads
- Meta ads
Platforms
- Lead platforms (hipages and co)
Every one of them ends the same way: an enquiry in your phone
| Channel | The job it does | What it costs | Go deeper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Website + SEO | Turns searches into enquiries that come only to you | One-off build, then it keeps bringing work in | Websites for tradies |
| Google Ads | Puts you at the top of Google this week | Pay per click | Google Ads for tradies |
| Meta ads (Facebook and Instagram) | Reaches locals who weren't searching | An ad budget you set | Advertising for tradies |
| Google Business Profile | Gets you into the three business listings at the top of Google | Free | Local SEO for tradies |
| Reviews | Makes a stranger comfortable calling you | Free, earned job by job | Covered below |
| Social posts | Shows recent work to people checking you out | Your time | Not a service we sell |
| Lead platforms | Leads within days, shared with up to two others | Subscription plus credits | hipages review |
Why does the website come first?
Because every other channel points back at it. Ads land on it, your Google listing links to it, and referrals look you up before they ring.
A website does two jobs at once. It convinces the person who has already found you. Built properly, it also gets found: SEO is the work of getting your website to show up on Google when someone searches your trade and suburb.
Quick Mick's Plumbing runs on exactly that. The website sits on page one of Google and brings in around 10 new clients a month with no ad spend at all (KINGTRADIE client result, July 2026).
The honest catch: getting onto page one takes months, which is why the paid channels below exist. Whether that wait is worth paying for at all has its own honest answer in is SEO worth it. What all of this costs is its own question, answered in three sourced guides: tradie website costs, SEO costs in Australia and website maintenance costs.
How do Google Ads work for a tradie?
You pay Google each time someone clicks your ad, and in return you sit above the free results the moment someone searches for your trade. What a click costs depends on how many other businesses are bidding for it, and it varies a lot between trades.
| The search | What a click costs |
|---|---|
| "plumber near me" | about $19.82 |
| "electrician near me" | about $10.84 |
| "landscaper near me" | about $3.14 |
Semrush AU estimates, retrieved 20 July 2026.
That spread changes the maths trade by trade. A landscaper can try ads for the price of a carton; a plumber wants every lead tracked from day one, because ten wasted clicks is real money. Click costs for the common trades are collected on one benchmarks page: Google Ads click costs by trade.
Against SEO it comes down to speed versus keeping what you built: ads get the phone ringing this week and stop the day the budget does. The full comparison: SEO vs Google Ads.
What can Meta ads do that Google can't?
Reach people who weren't searching. Nobody scrolls Instagram looking for a drain plumber, but the right offer in the feed finds the homeowner who's been putting a job off.
It works when the ad lands on a website built to turn visits into enquiries. Mr Loo, a Queensland plumber, runs ongoing Meta ads into a website we rebuilt: 303 enquiries from $4,291 in spend, $14.16 each, and $120k of work in three months directly from the ads (KINGTRADIE client result, July 2026).
Cost per lead is the number to watch, and it only means something if you also track which leads turn into quotes. Typical click and lead prices for Meta ads sit on one page: what Facebook ads cost in Australia. Where Meta sits against every other way to spend an ad dollar: advertising for tradies.
What does a Google Business Profile do?
It's the free listing Google gives your business, with your reviews, hours and a call button. It's what gets you into the three business listings Google shows at the top, before any website. For a local trade, that box gets seen first.
Plumber Near You | Book Online
- Nearby Plumbing
- A Local Plumbing Co
- Metro Plumbers
The demand behind it is not small. "Plumber near me" alone gets 22,200 Australian searches a month (Semrush AU, July 2026), and the three listings sit at the top of every one of them. Add up every search from someone looking to hire a plumber, suburb by suburb and job by job, and it comes to 1.6 million a month; the full count is on how many people search for a plumber (Semrush AU, 8 September 2026). An electrician is the same story: "electrician near me" is 22,200 a month too, and every electrician search added up comes to about a million; that count is on how many people search for an electrician (Semrush AU, 8 September 2026). A builder's searches mostly name the job instead: "bathroom renovations" is 14,800 a month, "builders near me" 4,400, and every builder search added up, renovations included, comes to 1.6 million; that count is on how many people search for a builder (Semrush AU, 8 September 2026). A painter's are smaller and just as local: "painters near me" is 5,400 a month, and every painter search added up comes to about half a million; that count is on how many people search for a painter (Semrush AU, 8 September 2026). A carpenter's are smaller again and the most local of all: "carpenter near me" is 3,600 a month, and every carpenter search added up comes to about 84,000; that count is on how many people search for a carpenter (Semrush AU, 9 September 2026).
Filling it out properly costs nothing: the type of business you pick, the suburbs you tell Google you work in, photos of finished jobs, and hours that match reality. Field by field, that is its own job: setting up your Google Business Profile. The rest of getting found by people near you is in local SEO for tradies.
Why do recent reviews beat a big total?
Because readers check the dates. 74% of people look for reviews written in the last three months (BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey, February 2026).
A big total that stopped two years ago says something changed. A steady trickle, one or two a month, every month, says the work is still good. Reviews also help your Google listing show up, so the habit pays twice.
The habit itself is simple: ask on the day the job wraps up, while the client is happiest, and reply to every review you get. And never buy them: fake reviews carry real penalties in Australia, and they read fake anyway.
Is posting on social media worth your time?
We can be straight here, because social media management isn't something KINGTRADIE sells: posting is worth doing, and it mostly helps win work that started somewhere else.
About 21 million social media accounts were active in Australia in late 2025, roughly three in four people (DataReportal, Digital 2026 Australia). Your future clients are in the feed, but that's not where they search for a tradie. They're checking you out after finding you somewhere else.
So the bar is low. A feed with recent work, real photos and a phone number does the job. Follower counts don't win quotes.
Where do hipages and the lead platforms fit?
As a bridge, honestly. Lead platforms are apps like hipages that sell you enquiries. Your profile on one can be live in days with leads coming in, and when the calendar has holes, that speed is worth paying for.
Two published numbers frame the deal: plans run $139 to $649 a month plus GST, and every lead is capped at 3 businesses, so up to three tradies can pay to quote the same job (hipages pricing page, July 2026).
That's the trade: fast activity, shared leads, and a profile that stays on the platform if you leave. Our full reviews, every number sourced, written knowing we sell the other option (a website and Google listing that are yours): hipages review and Airtasker review. The side-by-side: hipages leads vs your own website.
Where do tradies actually get their leads?
Six places, and they differ on three things: what a lead costs you, how fast it starts, and whether it is yours to keep. Here they are side by side.
| Where the lead comes from | What it costs you | How fast it starts | Yours to keep? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Word of mouth and repeat clients | Nothing but the job done well | Already running | Yes |
| Your Google listing (the free listing with your reviews, hours and a call button) | Free to set up and keep filled in | Weeks to a few months to reach the top three | Yes |
| Your website coming up on Google (SEO) | The build, then the monthly work; nothing per click | Months, then it keeps going | Yes |
| Google Ads | Per click: A$11.30 to A$53.95 for "plumber near me", A$3.24 to A$10.80 for "carpenter near me" | Days | The account and the ads, yes; the leads stop when the spend stops |
| Meta (Facebook and Instagram) ads | Per lead, set by your budget | Days | Same as Google Ads |
| Lead platforms (hipages, Airtasker) | $139 to $649 a month plus GST, and each lead is sold to up to 3 businesses | Days | No. The profile and the reviews stay on their platform |
Click costs are Google Keyword Planner top-of-page bid ranges, AU, retrieved 21 July 2026 (the full table by trade is on our Google Ads cost per click by trade page). Platform fees from the hipages pricing page, July 2026.
The first three rows are the ones you own. They take longer to get going, and once they are going they do not stop when you stop paying. The last three are the ones you rent: fast, and gone the day the money stops. That is the whole decision. Rent while you need to, and build the owned ones underneath so you can rent less each year.
Renting leads is not wrong, and the platforms have their place as a bridge. The side-by-side is on hipages leads vs your own website. Which owned channel to build first depends on where the business is at, which is the next section.
Where should you start?
Depends where the business is at. Three common starting points:
-
First year on your own
Free channels first, paid as a bridge.
Set up your Google listing properly and ask every happy client for a review. If this month's calendar has holes, a lead platform or a small Meta ads budget fills the gaps while the free ones build up.
-
Steady work, wrong jobs
Build the website so the jobs you want more of can find you.
The better jobs come from clients who found you, read the reviews and chose you. A website that shows up on Google for the right services changes the kind of enquiry landing in your phone.
-
Booked ahead, building a crew
Add Google Ads as the dial you turn.
When a new van needs feeding, ads are the one you can turn up on Monday and ease off in a quiet week. By this stage everything should be in your own name: the website, the Google listing, the ad account.
If you would rather have all of this run for you, that is exactly what our marketing for tradies service does.

Marketing questions?
Straight answers on getting a trade business found online.
How do I get clients as a tradie?
Get the free ones right first: your Google Business Profile, the free Google listing, with recent reviews, and a website that names your services and suburbs. Then pay for speed where you need it. Google Ads catch people searching right now, Meta ads put your work in front of locals, and a lead platform can bridge quiet patches while the rest builds.
What's the best digital marketing for a trade business?
The ones where someone is already searching for a tradie bring the best enquiries, because that person came looking: your Google listing, SEO (getting your website found on Google) and Google Ads. Meta ads reach people who were not searching, and win on numbers and cost per lead. Most established trade businesses end up running one of each: a search one for quality and a feed one for volume.
How much does digital marketing cost for a tradie?
It depends what you run. A click costs about $19.82 for "plumber near me" and $3.14 for "landscaper near me" (Semrush AU, retrieved 2 August 2026), hipages plans run $139 to $649 a month plus GST, and a website is a one-off build. The channel-by-channel breakdown lives in our advertising guide.
Do tradies need social media?
No, and KINGTRADIE doesn't sell social media management, so that's a straight answer. What a feed does well is back you up: people who found you through Google or a referral will check your recent work before ringing. A handful of real job photos beats a polished posting schedule.
Should a tradie start with SEO or Google Ads?
Ads first if the phone needs to ring this month; they work in days and stop when the budget does. SEO first if you're building for next year; it takes months to show up on Google, then keeps working with no cost per click. Plenty run ads while the free side builds, then ease off. Full comparison: SEO vs Google Ads.
How competitive is the trade market in Australia?
Crowded. There are 1,983,900 employed technicians and trades workers across Australia (ABS, February 2026 quarter), so in any suburb a homeowner has plenty of names to pick from. That's the whole case for marketing: the work goes to the tradie who's easy to find and easy to trust, not the best on the tools. The full breakdown by trade, state and licence sits in our count of how many tradies work in Australia.
